Shoreline Golf Links Advisory Greens
Committee
Minutes of
Meeting held on
JUNE 16, 2009
In Attendance: Mona Nakamura,
Absent:
1. Goose and Coot Management Update
Jack mentioned that efforts are still being evaluated at that no
final decisions have been made.
2. Junior Golf Tournaments
Jack mentioned the preparations
are under way for the US Kids tournament which will be held on 6/18 with 100
golfers. The Shoreline Junior
Classic will be held 6/26
with 216 golfers.
3. Superintendent’s Update
Jack gave the Superintendent’s report for
Steve Crane who was at another meeting.
The maintenance crews have lowered green heights and will begin to
verticut greens weekly to smooth out putting surface. Greens have been bumpy
and uneven due to the growth and seed heads of the poa. Verticutting the
greens will remove excess thatch under the turf (which makes them puffy) and
remove the seed heads.
Greens were sprayed last week for the
yellow rings (Yellow Patch) that have appeared over the past month. With
the cool and overcast weather these usually appear in March and April.
Also added to the spray application was a growth regulator which inhibits
vertical growth but encourages lateral growth for the poa.
Maintenance crews completed sod
installation on #18 fairway at the end of May. The maintenance crews have
begun mowing the new sod and will hopefully have it open near the end of June
or early July. Dirt hauling will continue on the right of the cart path
(out of bounds area) to make small mounding to reduce balls going down into the
waste area. Almost all of the bunkers on the course have been cleaned and
should be completed by this week. Due to the high cost of sand, bunkers
to be filled with new sand will be minimal this year. Maintenance crews will fill only the bunkers
in the most need of sand this summer.
Open house of new maintenance facility was
on June 11th. City Council,
the City Manager, and City employees were in attendance.
4. Questions from Committee Members
Mona Nakamura asked a question regarding the course rating for the
red tees. The course was recently rated and dropped from a 123 to 120. She is
wondering why the course was rated lower. Jack said that he would do a little
research and would follow up and put the response in the minutes. The PWGA is
the independent handicap service that governs women’s play at public facilities
in
Harry Emerzian asked the Committee if they felt the number of
meetings should be reduced. The Committee was fine with meeting once a month.
Vic Calvo
expressed his concerns about comments made at City Council budget meetings
regarding the Shoreline Golf Course financial situation. Vic reminded the
Committee that the golf course has been operated by lessees in the past who did
not maintain the course in as good of condition that the City has. Jack
mentioned to the Committee that he will continue to update them regarding the
financial situation as information becomes available.
The next Advisory Greens Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. in
the Golf Course Conference Room.
