June has come and gone along with the Club Championship Tournament. The annual BBQ and luncheon is also history for another year. Thanks to Frank Frankhauser for arranging the pairings and Handicaps for the Tournament. He again provided us with a great lunch with the help of Michael’s restaurant and all had a great time! Thanks again Frank for another great job.
Thanks should also go to Bruce Fujikawa for getting some great prizes for the drawing after lunch. Bruce always seems to get the most for our money, thanks with the help of Greg in the pro shop. Of course, without the help of Bruce’s wife who makes sure each member gets a ticket for the drawing, the Drawing could be something different Thanks to the better half of the Fujikawa family.
Most of you have probably noticed the binder at the Greeter’s Table with pictures of each Monday foursome. If your foursome somehow missed having their picture taken or you would like to retake the picture because one of your regulars was missing, please let us know and we will try to remedy the oversight. We would also like to get pictures of the members who play as fill-ins or as singles. The more pictures of Club Members we have, the easier it is for everyone to recognize each other.
A member recently questioned paying $5.00 sweeps money if he did not like the format of the day, but still wanted to play. If you are a member or a guest of a member, the answer is you pay if you play within the allocated Tee Times, which supports the Club, which supports the Golf Course. Also, the Golf Course supports the Club by offering discounted Green Fees and discounts on certain items purchased in the Pro Shop on Monday mornings, besides making Tee Times available to the Club each Monday and Wednesday morning.
When a Member signs in at the Greeter’s Table before play on Monday, the format for the following Monday is displayed on the Information Board. If the format for the coming Monday is not one of your favorites and you may not play next week, please release your tee time to allow another Club member to have a chance to play at a time when he may not normally play.
For those playing this tournament, assigned tee times are posted on the bulletin board at Shoreline and on the Club web site. Please check-in 30 minutes before your tee time and be sure to have your NCGA card available. Our Tournament is Better Ball Foursome. Please make sure you post your score and put the scorecard for the foursome in the Tournament Box at Shoreline by the following Monday.
September 18th Annual Meeting, Elections and
Golf…
Our traditional Annual Meeting where directors are elected is fast approaching. As in the past, our day begins with 7:00AM coffee and pastry at Michael’s, as well as voting for Directors, followed by a shotgun start at 7:30AM. The tournament is Better Ball Foursome with foursomes arranged by the Club. Following golf, we will have our usual luncheon with door prizes awarded to lucky golfers and the announcement of new Board Members for 2007. The deadline for sign-ups is September 11th. An entry form can be found at the end of this Newsletter.
The nominees for the Board of Directors are Mike Anderson, Frank Frankhauser, Wilson Fong, Dick McLeod, Jim Schmidt and Ralph Yob. The full slate of candidates will be listed again in the September 2006 Newsletter. Please be prepared to vote for four (4) directors during our meeting.
Thanks to the nominating committee of Sid Cantwell, Don Gorrell, Floyd Okada, Win Sturtevant and Ernie Wong (chairman) for putting together our slate of outstanding candidates.
Unless you made a specific request to continue receiving a hardcopy of the Newsletter, this is the last Newsletter that will be sent via U.S. Mail. To continue to receive a hardcopy, contact Bob Williams at (650)-964-1280 or send him a note at 418 Deodara Drive, Los Altos, 94024, stating that you would like a hardcopy each month. For the rest of us, monthly Newsletters will be posted on our web site at www.shorelineseniorsgolfclub.org at the beginning of each month. A printable version will also be available on our web site for those wishing a hardcopy.
The Renewal form can be downloaded from our Club Web Site: www.shorelineseniorsgolfclub.org for those with access to a computer. Also, during the month of October and November 2006, Club Membership Renewal forms will be available at the Greeter’s table each week.
Due to requests and PF numbers, four groups have different tee times. Please be sure to check your tee time each month on the Club Web Site or the Club Bulletin Board at Shoreline Golf Links. If you wish a different tee time, simply call Don Sutton or Hideo Hashimoto and request a change. Remember, you may request a tee time up to four groups in front and you must have a higher PF number.
Meet the Seniors, Al Lui…
Hong Kong is one of the most interesting cities in the world and if you're planning a trip in that direction, the man to see is long time Shoreline senior, Al Lui. Al was born and raised in Hong Kong and remained there until he was thirty. He also lived and studied in Japan for six years, preparing for a career in shipping and trading. Al manages to get in about four rounds of golf every week and a bit of tennis. He has had two holes-in-one, at Shoreline and at Sunnyvale and is looking for a couple more. He is married and has two girls and one boy. The family lives in Sunnyvale.

The application deadline is Friday, September 15 at 5:00 p.m. For more information on this exciting event, please contact the Pro Shop at 650-903-4653. Single Rider Vehicle Arrives
The single rider ADA accessible vehicle has arrived at
Shoreline Golf Links. The Solo Rider by
Club Car is designed for mobility impaired individuals, in particular those
golfers who have difficulty walking.
Golfers who have difficulty walking and wish to rent the Solo Rider Golf
Cart will be asked to identify themselves to the Pro Shop counter staff at the
time the rental is requested. A
government-issued permanent disabled car placard must be furnished each time
the cart is rented. Any other
identifying information the golfer believes to be reasonably accepted as valid
must be approved by Head Golf Professional Joe DeBode in advance of the rental. The rental fee is $22.00.
Disabled Flags Soon to
be Available
Golfers with special needs or disabilities will soon be able to display an identifying blue flag on their carts. The blue flags have been ordered and should arrive at the course soon. The flags will allow golfers to drive carts inside the ropes in the rough. While golfers with special needs have been afforded this opportunity in the past, the blue flags will formalize the program and make it easier for marshals, staff and other golfers to identify those golfers who may drive inside the ropes in the rough. As in the past, on “Cart Path Only” days, no carts will be allowed off the paths.
Dirt Haul
Over the past several years, the area behind #18 green has slowly settled and became unsightly. Last year, there was an underground fire under a landfill gas well. Many trucks needed to drive into the area with materials to put out the fire and also compact the soil to eliminate any possible air gaps. So began the dirt haul for 2006!
#18 Green: The scope of the project was to 1) remove the range and practice tent from the #18 fairway view; 2) remove sight of the #18 green from the range (to discourage the public from hitting/aiming at #18 green from the range; 3) add a dome effect behind the green to make it more visible when approaching it on the fairway; 4) redo the mounds on the right of the path to eliminate errant shots to the green and keep them in play, and 5) move the cart path, routing golfers behind the green to speed up play on the final hole. Mounds behind the green will also improve aesthetics and will help move water out of the area. The pathway will allow golfers to talk, check scores or wait for another group safely behind the green.
#16 Green: The left of #16 green will be filled on the approach and the cart path raised on route to the back of the green. This area has also settled a few feet over the past few years. With the landfill well recently re-drilled and raised, this will be our high point and we will work the dirt around this mark. The front left bunker, which was reduced in size four years ago, will be buried and rebuilt closer to the green making it more in play and a hazard that golfers must be aware of as they hit into the green.
