Poppy Hills Tournament Coming Soon…

The sign-up form for Poppy Hills will be available in the June 2006 Newsletter.  As in the past, our game will be Better Ball Foursome.  Poppy Hills requires payment before July 10 in the form of one check for all players.   So, please mark Poppy Hills on your calendar and be prepared to sign-up as soon as you receive the form in the Newsletter.

Hardcopy of The Club Newsletter To Be Discontinued…

The Newsletter is posted on the Club Web Site each month and is readily accessible. In addition, many Club Members have Internet access.  Therefore, unless you specifically request one, the Board of Directors has decided that beginning September 1, 2006, Club Members would no longer receive a hardcopy of the Newsletter.  To continue to receive your Newsletter through the mail after September 1, contact Bob Williams at (650)-964-1280 or send him a note at 418 Deodara Drive, Los Altos, 94024, stating that you would like a hardcopy each month.

A Message from Jim Whitaker…

April showers, showers, showers and more showers are almost over, it seems. It’s probably a good thing since we may have more Mayflowers than we want.  Surely we will all be happier once the rain stops, the Course dries out, the greens recover from the spring plugging and sanding, and the height of the rough becomes manageable.

The Board decided at the last meeting not to change the Local Rules pertaining to holes Numbers 4, 11, 12, and 17. We will be placing signs on Holes #4 and 11 indicating the drop areas. Players using these areas must drop 2-clubs no nearer hole behind these signs.

Annual Club Championship by OJ…

Our annual Club Championship Tournament will be played on three consecutive Mondays, June 5, June 12, and June 19, 2006.  Format for the Club Championship is LOW NET with players competing for Club Championship in four flights.  Assignment to the flights will be according to the player’s June handicap.  To be eligible for the Club Championship, you must play all three Championship rounds.  Sweeps monies will be distributed weekly, as is done in our regular weekly tournaments.  Club Championship Plaques will be awarded to the winners of the flight competition.  A low Net Plaque will be awarded to the player who has the Low Net Score for the three-week championship play.  An honorary Low Gross Plaque will be awarded to the player who shoots the Low Gross score for the three-week championship play.  In the event of a tie for the Low New or Low Gross Club Championship, the winner will be determined by a scheduled playoff.

Tee Time Survey Results…

Sixty-six members responded to the Tee Time Survey with the majority requesting no change (38).  Seventeen members chose the lottery and 8 members voted for sign-ups as their number one option.  Several members did not choose an option but rather made other suggestions. Also, 36 members wanted some sort of Pace of Play initiative while 26 members felt none was necessary.

Since the majority of survey respondents voted for no change in tee time allocation procedures, the Board decided to continue with the present system with the following modifications.

  1. We will continue with the Participation Factor, beginning May 1.  Members of foursomes are asked to release their tee time by Friday preceding the Monday Tournament.  As in the past, only two members of a foursome may release their tee time during any one-week.  If a third member of a foursome will not be playing, that foursome will need to find a replacement or the foursome’s Participation Factor will be lowered accordingly.
  2. Participation Factors for each foursome will be posted on the bulletin board and on the Club Web Site the beginning of each month.  If a foursome wishes to move to another tee time, all they need do is ask Don Sutton or Hideo Hashimoto for a change.  However, you may only request a tee time slot within four (4) spots above or below your assigned tee time at any one time.  If your Participation Factor number is higher than the foursome occupying the requested tee time, the change/switch will be initiated the following month.  If there are two groups who wish to move to the same tee time, then the foursome with the highest Participation Factor will be accommodated.
  3. The Participation Factor is subordinate to Pace of Play.  If you request to be moved to a different tee time but demonstrate difficulty keeping up with the group in front of you, your foursome will be informed of this pattern.  If this pattern persists, your foursome may be moved to a different tee time.  In addition, any foursome, whether you requested a change or not and demonstrating a persistent pattern of falling behind the group in front, may be asked to move to a different tee time.
  4. A clock will be placed next to the 18th Green for foursomes to record their finish time.  Each contact person for the foursome must record the finish time on his scorecard.  This time will be used to determine the pace for that foursome.
  5. It is our intent to be as open and considerate as possible.  If at all possible, Don and Hideo will discuss with foursomes the need for any involuntary change in their tee time.  It is anticipated that this will not happen if foursomes keep up with the group in front and release their tee times in a timely manner.

Club Web Site…

As many of you have discovered, our Club Web Site is up and running.  The results of the most recent tournament can be found in addition to past tournament results.  The names of the Board of Directors, assigned tee times, the Newsletter and more can all be found at www.shorelineseniorsgolfclub.org.  Please be sure to bookmark this as a favorite.

If you are interested in finding out more about the NCGA Handicap process, here is your chance.  A no cost to you program will be held at the Coyote Creek Golf Club on Saturday, May 13 from 9:30AM to 3:30PM.  Coyote Creek Golf Club is in San Jose at 1 Coyote Creek Drive.

Meet the Seniors: Chet Good…

Chet Good is a proud 'Hoosier' having been born in Danville and raised in Speedway, Indiana. His father was the principal of a one-room schoolhouse in that state.  Chet spent 44 years with General Motors and is a little uneasy about his pension benefits given the financial problems this firm has encountered lately. He served four years with GM in Japan where he had an opportunity to play some of that country's beautiful golf courses, with the girl caddies.  A widower, Chet has five daughters and resides in Cupertino. He keeps in shape walking the course and occasionally catches Japanese programs on television.

From the Desk of Paula Bettencourt…

Wolves at Shoreline?

Yes, we have “wolves” at Shoreline!  Well…sort of.  Two artificial wolves were recently purchased and put out on the course to assist in the continuing effort to control the bird population.  Steve Crane, Golf Course Superintendent, reports the birds have been avoiding the areas where the wolves are located  -- good news!

Bridge Over Permanente Creek

The opening of the new bridge over Permanente Creek has improved traffic circulation at the course.  The approach to the bridge on the east side of the creek, however, is not working as well as anticipated.  We are in the process of looking into some minor modifications to improve the situation.

Demo Day

The popular Shoreline Golf Links Demo Day Sale was held on Saturday, April 22, 2006.  Seventeen vendors, including Titleist, Taylor Made, Ping, Calloway, Ben Hogan, Tour Edge, Top Flight, Cleveland, Sun Mountain, Adidas and others, were on hand with the latest in 2006 clubs and products.  The event started at 10:00 a.m., ended at 4:00 p.m. and was a success.  Many members of the Shoreline Seniors Golf Club attended and it was great to see you there!

Dirt Haul

The contract with the dirt hauler is in place and we are ready to go.  Unfortunately, the rain delayed our start date.   We hope to begin work on the initial projects in May.  The back of the 18th by the instructional tent is the first priority, with improvements to #13 following.
