Dues are Due…

The NCGA has raised their dues by $6.00 for the 2010 year. Therefore, the renewal fee of $76.00 ($45.00 for a Social Membership) reflects this increase. The renewal deadline is November 30. Dues will incur a $10 additional fee after that, increasing to $86.00 ($55.00 for Social Membership). The $76.00 breaks down to $36.00 for the NCGA and $40.00 for the Club. Our Club dues of $40.00 are used to subsidize the cost of luncheons for the Member-Guest and Annual Meeting Tournaments. In addition, our dues support junior golf and pay for door prizes at the luncheons as well as defray costs for social events such as our dinner dance. For information about renewing your membership, contact Ted Roshinski at (408)-248-4065. A renewal form can be found at the end of this Newsletter or on the Club Website. Also, renewal forms can be found at the Greeter’s Table each week. Please be sure to renew by November 30, 2009 to help the Board plan activities for the 2010 year. Thank you.

Wednesday Tournament Sign-up Changes…

Effectively immediately, eight tee-time slots are allocated to Shoreline Seniors for Wednesday play, first tee time at 7:30 AM. Do come early and play and utilize all eight tee-time slots for 32 players. The Board of Directors has decided that first come first served will apply, but you can SIGN UP TO FOUR PLAYERS AND PAY FOR ALL FOUR PLAYERS.

Letter to Joe DeBode from Sid Cantwell regarding Wednesday sign-up Changes:

“As a result of action taken by the Board of Directors of the Shoreline Seniors Golf Club at its meeting on July 23, 2009, I sent you a letter requesting a change in the method of how our members signed up for play in our weekly Wednesday tournaments and, also, how the foursomes were to be made up.  You agreed to our requests and implemented the revised procedures in September.  As a result of general member dissatisfaction with the changes the Board made, the matter was again raised at our board meeting on Thursday, October 1st, and it was unanimously voted to return to the system that was previously in effect.  I am writing to ask that you advise your employees of this request to immediately revert to our procedures that were in effect prior to September.  We will be communicating to our members that our Club will will revert to our old, established policy of allowing members to show up and pay the required fees of others with whom they are going to play in order to secure tee times and defined foursomes.

I am sorry for the inconvenience that these requests may have caused you and your staff, but thank you for your continued help and cooperation.  Please contact me if you have any concerns about these revisions.  By the way, the October 1st board meeting was the last meeting of this Board for 2009.  John Gannon was elected President of our club for 2010 and will hold the first meeting of the new board in January, 2010.”

General Membership Meeting, September 21, 2009...

At our General Membership Meeting, Dave Biklen, Jim Chiochios, Jim Clark, Frank Frankhauser, and Tom Konno were elected as new Board Members beginning January 1, 2010. Dave Biklen will fill Frank Rucollo’s vacated Board position whose term will expire on December 31, 2011. The terms of all other new Board Member will expire on December 31, 2012. The Board wishes to thank outgoing Board Members Mike Anderson, Wilson Fong, Frank Frankhauser, and Dick McLeod for their many years of service to the Club. A particular thank-you to Sid Cantwell who has served as Board President this past year and will remain on the Board for a fourth year as past-president.

Thank you from Shoreline Golf Links...

Thank you to the Shoreline Seniors, Shoreline Women’s, and Shoreline Golf Club for assisting with the Shoreline Junior Classic and US Kids Tournaments either through providing funding for trophies and/or volunteering to work the event.  The tournaments were a big success with over 300 youth participating.  We have received many positive comments from participants and parents and appreciate the clubs’ support.

Notes from Advisory Greens Committee Meeting by Harry Emerzian...

1:  Dave Serge,Utility Services Manager, explained that a blend of reclaimed water and potable water will be used at the Golf Course. Dave also gave a brief outline how the water system works and talked about the City’s effort to conserve water.

2:  Jack Smith mentioned that on Saturday, July 18, Par Valley Golf Club was conducting a tournament and one of their members suffered heart failure. The Pro Shop was called by a Course Marshall who was at the 13th hole. The Head Golf Professional took the A.E.D. (Automated External Defibrillator) with him. While waiting for emergency services to arrive, their member went into cardiac arrest and stopped breathing. The Head Golf Professional and Course Marshall performed CPR and used the portable defibrillator to revive the victim and sustain him until the Fire Department arrived. Editor’s note: Isn’t it nice that we have an A.E. D. close by..and personnel who know how to use it! Good Job, Joe!

3:  Jack Smith gave an update regarding the goose and coot management. He mentioned that the Goose Poop Remover has been operating approximately 20 hours per week on the Course and 10 hours per week in other areas of Shoreline. Losee’s Goose control continues to operate 5 days a week.

Jack also reported that due to the success of reducing the number of American coots on the golf course last winter by more than half, the City of Mountain View will not fill the three hazard ponds between holes #11 and #12 and near holes #17 and #10. The City of Mountain View will continue active management of roosting coots and geese using motorized boats and herding dogs and will install fencing between hazard ponds and adjacent turf to make it more difficult for birds to move between roosting and foraging areas. The City will also continue the process of goose population stabilization on a Regional basis in the spring. The City is in the process of developing a long term solution to the problem using information learned from the management practices instituted in the last couple of years.

4:  Steve Crane reported that verti cutting of the greens have improved their condition. There were some issues with the irrigation system in mid July that forced manually operating the irrigation system for a few days. Steve added that aerification of greens will take place September 29 and 30. The new dirt mounds along the 18th fairway will be hydro seeded. Jack Smith reported that tees #2 white, #12 red, white and blue, #17 white, #7 black and blue, #9 red and #15 blue will be leveled starting in late September or early October. Jack also mentioned that pathways on #3, #12 and #18 will be repaired the last week of September.

5:  Jack mentioned that there were 64,958 paid rounds in 2008 and 09 which were down 2,736 from the previous year.
